Psalm 46:10 "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth."
“You could call them God’s fingerprints. Suddenly you’re seeing them all over your life. Unexplainable encounters. Little miracles. Big answers to simple requests that only recently you wouldn’t have had the courage to utter. Everywhere you’re seeing surprising clues, telltale signs, and unforgettable proofs that a divine hand has touched your life.
It’s as if God bent down, heard you pleading for something improbable, and exclaimed, ‘I’ve been waiting to hear you ask for that!’ And things haven’t been the same since.” In 2001, the whole country was talking about Bruce Wilkinson’s Prayer of Jabez book. This excerpt came from the devotional book that came from that series. There was such a powerful message in the book, The Prayer of Jabez, and millions of copies of the book were sold. I loaned my copy of the book to someone and never got it back. I do have the devotional book and another book in the series, Secrets of the Vine. There is a third book in the series and I owned it also but have no idea where it is today. If another person has benefited by having those books it’s worth not having in my collection.
Look back at the paragraph I quoted from the devotional book, is there something specific in your life you’d like to ask God to give you? He loves when we come to Him and earnestly ask for what we desire in our life. It proves to Him that we depend on Him and we know He is in control of everything. It gives Him His rightful place in our life, the One who is in control of it all.
Look at the prayer of Jabez from 1 Chronicles 4 verses 9 and 10,
Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers,
And his mother called his name Jabez,
Saying, “Because I bore him in pain.”
And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying,
“Oh, that You would bless me indeed,
And enlarge my territory,
That Your hand would be with me,
And that You would keep me from evil,
That I may not cause pain!”
So God granted him what He requested.
Can you imagine that God wants all of us to ask Him for our blessings in life this way? He expects His children to ask just the way we would ask our parents for a toy when we were little or ask to go out with friends as a teenager. I know it seems a little out of the ordinary for grown folks to ask someone for certain privileges but that is exactly what God wants from us. If we make our requests known to Him verbally, if it is in accordance to His will God will open up the flood gates of heaven and pour out all of His blessings onto you in love. What makes God so powerful in my mind is that He already knows what He is going to bless my life with and when I ask according to His will in life He graciously wants to give me the desires of my heart.
If I feel like I can do all of my life on my own without regard to God in my life then I’m setting myself up for lots of hurt and disappointment, eventually anyway. God wants us to come to Him with our requests, no matter how big or small and insignificant they make seem. He wants us to talk to Him and make Him real in our lives. It may be a hard step to just pray to God like He’s sitting in the room with you b/c He is invisible but if you start to treat your relationship with Him that way, you’ll begin to really have conversations with our heavenly Father. Your day will be better for continually staying in conversation with the Lord. Just try doing it for one day and see how much better you feel by the end of that day. He is right beside you, every day, all day. Give it a shot tomorrow and by bedtime you’ll never be sorry for making Him your constant companion.
